Nasima

The cafeteria was packed, which shouldn't have been a surprise, but I swear when I walked in with Ambrose there was a split second of silence. My heart nearly froze in my chest as I felt even more eyes on me than I had when Nana had let people place bets on me.

"Getting in the game, Wolf?" one man said as we walked by, heading toward the banks of food that were laid out at the back of the room. Looking at it all, there was a chance I'd be eating better in here than I had when I was on the run. I tried to ignore the other calls, people teasing Ambrose or hurling insults at me for no reason whatsoever. Unfortunately for them, this wasn't the first time I'd been in a hostile environment.

"Grab what you want and we'll eat over there," Ambrose said with a jerk of his head.

The wolves were almost easy enough for me to spot even without Ambrose pointing them out, what with the way their gazes were fixed on me and not him. Apparently, I was upsetting the balance even from here. It didn't hurt that their plates were mostly full of any kind of meat they could get. They were definitely carnivores. I had the feeling that if we were going to be sitting with them then things were going to get awkward and fast.

I loaded my plate with a huge salad, piled high with greens of all different kinds, and a large bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. As I moved down the line I couldn't help but wonder what the tax paying humans would think of this spread. I knew food was all they really provided us with, along with other basic essentials like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc., but this was better food than I had expected.

As though he sensed my question Ambrose said, "The food is the only thing that prevents us from killing each other. A while back, they sold the prison to some new private company that cut the food back to the shittiest, cheapest stuff they could find. There were riots, guards were slaughtered on the spot, we were killing each other. The more blood that was shed, the more the violence increased, with the vampires growing stronger than they had ever been before in here. They were nearly able to take over, can you imagine? Vamps running the prisons? We'd be cattle to them and it wouldn't be long before the humans became chow as well, so they started feeding us enough so we could fight back."

"Or maybe enough so that if you are fed on it doesn't kill you," I added.

He grunted in response. "That was also when they reduced our rations of everything else and left us with a single set of sweats for the whole year."

As we rounded the end of the buffet I found myself staring at bags of blood and blood infused food and drink. I guess this was the vampire section.
